Company Profile
A leading Australian independent production company, April Films is part of the April Entertainment Group of companies that also includes April Distribution. The pre-requisites for our films are quality and boldness – of idea, point of view and style. We do nothing in the middle. April started life with a first-look deal with Universal Studios and then United Artists/MGM with a remit to develop, acquire and produce distinctive feature films. Jindabyne, directed by Ray Lawrence, starring Gabriel Byrne and Laura Linney, was selected for Directors’ Fortnight – Cannes 2006, and sold to Sony Pictures Classics for its US release in 2007. Having raised substantial private equity for its development slate, in 2004 April partners Garry Charny and Philippa Bateman set up a joint venture with international investment bank Babcock & Brown to finance the production of Australian films using private equity – The April Babcock & Brown Movie Venture. Jindabyne was financed through this venture which was responsible for raising 90% of all private equity invested in feature films in Australia in 2005. With Roadshow Films, April devised the launch and marketing concept for Jindabyne in Australia where it yielded the highest box office of any territory. April Films won the SPAA Independent Producer of the Year Award in 2006. April’s next project is the adaptation of Geraldine Brooks’ Pulitzer Prize winning novel March.
